Tai Chi
The program includes the study of Taoist arts (Dogyo) such as Taigyokuken, Hakkesho, Hakkyokuken, and the ki-ko program.
These arts have a dual purpose, both martial and therapeutic. In ancient China, the movements learned for personal defense and warfare originated from longevity exercises that stimulate "Ki" or "Chi".
天龍山養生気功
Tenryuzan Yōjō kikō
The program of study on kiko at Tenryuzanji Buddhist temple.
KIKŌ 氣功 is the Japanese equivalent of Qi-Gong (Chi Kung). Literally, it means "Energy Work".
Kiko encompasses the entirety of ourselves as human beings, the physical and spiritual characteristics on tangible and ethereal planes, and works with the animating force that makes us alive, the Ki.
Ki, just like any matter/energy, cannot be created or destroyed, but simply transforms from one state to another.
The techniques in the kiko program of the temple involve both physical work, mainly focusing on body flexibility, and work on breathing to unlock vital energy.
The ki-ko of Tenryuzanji includes self-massage techniques that stimulate the tsubo, the containers of energy. Through techniques of acupressure, percussion, and rubbing, the "ki no nagare" is restored.
Taigyokuken involves slow movements, while Hakkesho is based on the practice of circular movements following the teachings of the "I Ching".
Hakkyokuken is quite unique as it lies between internal and external arts and is characterized by explosive movements.
